Home Exchange in Costa Rica

0 verified homes

Costa Rica feels like nature turned up to full volume. Howler monkeys wake you before dawn, scarlet macaws streak overhead, and the air smells of wet earth and ripe guava. The country packs cloud forests, volcanic hot springs, and two coastlines into a space smaller than West Virginia. Ticos move at a different pace—pura vida isn't just a saying, it's the rhythm of life here. Whether you're drawn to the misty highlands around Monteverde, the surf-pounded Pacific beaches, or the laid-back Caribbean vibe of the southern coast, you'll find a Costa Rica that trades hurry for hammocks and small talk for long dinners under the stars.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What's the best time to visit Costa Rica?

Dry season runs December through April—sunny skies and easier travel on unpaved roads, especially if you're heading to the Pacific beaches or Guanacaste. Green season (May to November) brings afternoon downpours, lusher landscapes, and fewer crowds. The Caribbean side has its own rhythm: it's drier in September and October when the Pacific gets drenched. If you want to see sea turtles nesting, aim for July through October on the Caribbean coast or October through March in Guanacaste.
