Home Exchange in Iceland

0 verified homes

Iceland feels like the planet's rough draft — all geothermal steam, black sand, and light that never quite behaves. Reykjavík hums with cozy cafés and street art, while beyond the capital, moss-covered lava fields stretch toward glaciers and waterfalls that thunder year-round. Summer brings the midnight sun and lupine blooms; winter wraps the island in darkness perfect for northern lights. You'll eat lamb stew in turf-roofed farmhouses, soak in hot springs with locals, and drive roads where sheep have right of way. It's a place that rewires your sense of scale.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

When's the best time to visit Iceland?

Summer (June to August) offers near-endless daylight, wildflowers, and accessible highland roads, though it's peak season. Winter (November to March) brings northern lights, smaller crowds, and ice caves, but shorter days and unpredictable weather. Shoulder seasons — late April through May and September — split the difference: you'll catch autumn colours or spring thaw, fewer tourists, and decent chances of aurora without the deep freeze. Whenever you go, pack layers; Icelandic weather shifts fast.
