Home Exchange in Japan

0 verified homes

Japan unfolds in layers: temple bells at dawn in Kyoto, the neon hum of Tokyo's alleyways, the creak of wooden guesthouses in mountain villages where snow piles soft against paper screens. Here, seasons shape everything—cherry blossoms in spring, fireflies in June, the blaze of autumn maples, winter onsen steam rising into cold air. You'll find rhythm in the small things: the bow of a shopkeeper, the precision of a bento box, the quiet of a neighbourhood sento at dusk. Stay long enough to learn a local izakaya, to ride the last train home, to wake to the smell of miso soup drifting through thin walls.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

When's the best time to visit Japan?

Spring and autumn are classic for good reason—cherry blossoms peak late March through April, while November brings fiery foliage and crisp, clear days. Summer grows hot and humid, especially in cities, though it's festival season and the mountains stay cooler. Winter transforms the north into deep snow country, perfect for onsen towns and skiing, while the south remains mild. Avoid Golden Week in early May and Obon in mid-August unless you enjoy crowds; outside those windows, even popular spots breathe a little easier.
