Home Exchange in New Zealand
0 verified homes
New Zealand unfolds like two long green ribbons in the South Pacific — volcanic peaks softening into fjords, sheep-dotted hills meeting wild coastlines. The air smells of salt and fern. You'll find geothermal springs bubbling beside hiking trails, vineyards clinging to Central Otago slopes, and harbours where sailboats outnumber cars. Māori culture threads through place names and marae gatherings. Mornings arrive with kererū calls, evenings with impossibly long summer light. Whether you're drawn to the alpine drama of the South Island or the subtropical warmth up north, the rhythm here is unhurried, outdoors-first, and genuinely welcoming.

Frequently asked questions
How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?
You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.
Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?
Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.
Do I need to swap directly with the same person?
No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.
Can I join if I don't own a home?
Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.
When's the best time to visit New Zealand?
Summer (December to February) brings long daylight hours perfect for beaches and tramping, though it's also peak season. Autumn (March to May) offers golden light, fewer crowds, and harvest festivals in wine regions. Winter (June to August) transforms the South Island into a snowy playground for skiing, while the North stays mild. Spring (September to November) is wildflower season — lambs in paddocks, blossoms everywhere, and shoulder-season calm. Each season has its own magic; choose based on whether you want warmth and buzz or solitude and snow.
