Home Exchange in Romania

0 verified homes

Romania unfolds like a storybook of contrasts: medieval fortresses perch on Transylvanian hills, painted monasteries dot Bucovina's green valleys, and the Danube Delta sprawls in a tangle of reeds and waterways. In Bucharest, Belle Époque architecture stands alongside brutalist blocks, while mountain villages still follow rhythms set by sheep bells and hay carts. You'll taste mămăligă with sour cream, sip țuică in wood-beamed guesthouses, and hear folk ballads that predate borders. From the Carpathians to the Black Sea coast, this is a country that rewards slow travel and curious detours.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

When's the best time to visit Romania?

Late spring and early autumn are ideal — May through June and September through October bring mild weather, wildflowers in the mountains, and harvest season in wine regions like Dealu Mare. Summer draws crowds to the Black Sea resorts and high-altitude trails, while winter transforms Transylvania into a snow-dusted fairytale, perfect for exploring Brașov's Christmas markets or skiing in Poiana Brașov. If you're chasing folklore and tradition, plan around Easter or rural festivals in Maramureș, where wooden churches and hand-woven textiles still anchor daily life.
