Home Exchange in South Africa

0 verified homes

South Africa unfolds in layers: the briny Atlantic winds off Cape Town's peninsula, the golden highveld light over Johannesburg's jacaranda-lined streets, the wild coastline where the Indian Ocean meets indigenous forest in the Garden Route. Here, braai smoke drifts through suburban gardens on Sunday afternoons, while the scent of rooibos and koeksisters lingers in corner cafés. From the wine valleys of Stellenbosch to the urban energy of Maboneng, from the Drakensberg peaks to the surf breaks of Durban, this is a country that rewards slow discovery—where every region speaks its own language of landscape, flavour, and rhythm.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What's the best time to visit South Africa?

South Africa's seasons flip if you're coming from the north—summer runs December through February, bringing warm beach weather to the coast and afternoon thunderstorms inland. Cape Town shines in its dry summer months, while the Garden Route and KwaZulu-Natal coast stay pleasant year-round. Autumn (March-May) and spring (September-November) offer mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and spectacular wildflower blooms in the Western Cape. Winter (June-August) brings cooler, rainy days to the Cape but ideal game-viewing conditions up north, with thinner bush and animals gathering at waterholes.
