Home Exchange in Bulgaria

0 verified homes

Bulgaria hums with a rhythm most of Europe has forgotten: the clatter of copper coffee pots in mountain villages, the salt-sweet air of Black Sea mornings, the creak of wooden shutters opening onto cobbled lanes in Plovdiv's Old Town. It's a country where rose valleys bloom in May, where Thracian ruins share hillsides with Orthodox monasteries, and where a grandmother's shopska salad tastes like summer itself. Staying in a Bulgarian home means waking to the scent of banitsa baking, learning which bakery the locals queue at, and understanding why Bulgarians nod their heads to say no. The homes below open the door to that rhythm.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 7 free credits — one full week — so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All conversations happen inside the SwappaHome platform — you never have to share your personal email or phone number to coordinate a swap. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which regions of Bulgaria offer the most distinct experiences?

Sofia pulses with cafe culture and mountain proximity, while Plovdiv's artistic quarter sprawls across ancient hills. The Black Sea coast — Varna, Burgas, Sozopol — delivers beach life with a Balkan edge: grilled fish, wine bars, and pine-shaded coves. Inland, the Rila and Pirin ranges offer hiking and monastery villages where time moves differently. The Rose Valley near Kazanlak blooms intensely in late May and early June, filling the air with the scent that built Bulgaria's perfume trade.
