Home Exchange in Iceland

0 verified homes

Iceland announces itself in steam: geothermal plumes rising from black lava fields, the hiss of hot springs against cold air, the mineral smell of earth still forming. To stay here is to live inside the island's contradictions—midnight sun in summer, three-hour winter days, a capital city where horses graze at the edge of town. Hotels keep you at arm's length from the rhythms that matter: the late dinners after long hikes, the kitchen windows framing mountains or harbour lights, the quiet of a neighbourhood street after the tour buses leave. The homes below open the door to that rhythm.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 7 free credits — one full week — so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All conversations happen inside the SwappaHome platform — you never have to share your personal email or phone number to coordinate a swap. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

When's the best time to visit Iceland?

Summer (June–August) brings near-endless daylight and accessible highland roads, ideal for hiking and coastal exploration. Winter (November–March) offers northern lights and a stark beauty, though days are short and weather unpredictable. Shoulder seasons—May and September—split the difference: longer light than winter, fewer crowds than summer, and landscapes caught between seasons. Most Icelanders will tell you there's no bad time, only the wrong clothing.
