Home Exchange in Sintra

No verified homes listed in Sintra yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

Sintra smells of pine resin and pastry cream, its microclimate wrapping the hillside palaces in a near-permanent mist that the Portuguese call *nevoeiro*. The town exists in a different century—Romantic poets wrote about it, Moorish kings fortified it, and modern Lisboetas escape to it on weekends for the cool air and the forest trails that wind between quintas. Staying here means waking to the clatter of the Lisbon train pulling in below, then climbing cobbled lanes to a kitchen where you'll brew coffee and plan which palace to visit before the tour buses arrive. The homes below open the door to that rhythm.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 7 free credits — one full week — so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All conversations happen inside the SwappaHome platform — you never have to share your personal email or phone number to coordinate a swap. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

When is the best time to experience Sintra without the crowds?

Early mornings and late autumn through early spring offer the most atmospheric visits. The mist tends to linger until mid-morning, which means fewer day-trippers and softer light on the palace facades. Weekdays are markedly quieter than weekends, when Lisbon empties into the hills. Winter brings rain but also solitude—the forests turn emerald, and you'll have the trails and miradouros nearly to yourself. If you're staying locally, you can visit the palaces at opening time, before the first tour groups arrive from the capital.
