Home Exchange in Ghent

No verified homes listed in Ghent yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

Ghent moves at a different tempo than its more famous Belgian neighbours. Medieval towers lean over canals where students cycle past baroque guildhalls, and the scent of fresh waffles mingles with hops from century-old breweries. The city wears its history lightly—no velvet ropes, just cobblestones worn smooth by centuries of footsteps. Graslei's waterfront glows amber at dusk, while Patershol's narrow lanes hide vegetarian bistros and vintage shops in buildings older than most nations. It's a place where you can breakfast on speculoos, lunch on waterzooi, and spend the afternoon wandering Gravensteen's ramparts before the evening bells ring from Saint Bavo's.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which neighbourhoods capture Ghent's character best?

Patershol feels like the city's living room—medieval lanes packed with cosy restaurants and artisan shops where locals actually live. The university quarter around Sint-Pietersnieuwstraat hums with student energy and affordable eetcafés. For waterside calm, the streets between Coupure and the Leie river offer tree-lined walks and art nouveau facades. Ghent Zuid, once industrial, now draws creative types to converted warehouses and weekend markets. Unlike tourist-heavy centres elsewhere, these neighbourhoods blur together naturally—you'll find yourself wandering from one to another without realizing you've crossed invisible borders.
