Home Exchange in Debrecen
No verified homes listed in Debrecen yet — the first hosts get priority placement.
Hungary's second city unfolds east of the Danube, where the Great Plain begins its slow roll toward the horizon. Debrecen wears its Calvinist heritage in the austere beauty of the Great Reformed Church, yet the streets hum with university energy and thermal baths steam year-round. This is a place of paprika markets and neoclassical squares, where café culture meets agricultural tradition. Summer brings open-air festivals to Nagyerdő park, while autumn paints the forest in amber. The pace feels unhurried compared to Budapest, yet there's pride here—a city that has always charted its own course.

Frequently asked questions
How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?
You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.
Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?
Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.
Do I need to swap directly with the same person?
No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.
Can I join if I don't own a home?
Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.
What's the rhythm of life like in Debrecen compared to Budapest?
Debrecen moves at a more grounded pace, shaped by its university calendar and agricultural roots rather than capital-city hustle. Mornings start with strong coffee in art nouveau cafés around Kossuth Square. The thermal baths at Nagyerdő draw locals year-round, not just tourists. Evenings lean toward wine bars and traditional csárda restaurants rather than late-night clubs. It's a city where people still shop at the morning market, where conversations linger, and where the surrounding puszta—the open plain—reminds you that not all of Hungary revolves around the Danube bend.
