Home Exchange in Istanbul

No verified homes listed in Istanbul yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

Istanbul straddles two continents, and you feel it in every cup of çay sipped on a Bosphorus ferry, every call to prayer echoing over terracotta rooftops. Beyoğlu hums with art galleries and meyhanes serving meze until midnight, while the Asian side — Kadıköy, Moda — offers quieter cafés and weekend markets where locals haggle over fresh figs. Spring brings tulips to Emirgan Park and the scent of simit from corner carts. Winter means steamed mussels, wood smoke, and the city wrapped in mist. This is a place that rewards slow mornings and long walks through neighbourhoods that shift character every few blocks.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which neighbourhoods feel most local in Istanbul?

Cross to the Asian side for a slower pace: Kadıköy and Moda are full of independent bookshops, produce markets, and waterfront tea gardens where families gather on Sundays. On the European side, Balat's colourful houses and antique shops draw a creative crowd, while Beşiktaş offers a grittier, football-loving energy. Avoid the tourist crush of Sultanahmet by staying in residential pockets — you'll eat better, pay less, and hear more Turkish than English.
