Home Exchange in Zagreb

No verified homes listed in Zagreb yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

Zagreb wakes to the clatter of trams on cobblestone and the smell of strukli baking in corner bakeries. This is a capital that refuses to perform — no grand waterfront, no ancient ruin defining every postcard — just a grid of Austro-Hungarian facades, sprawling parks, and a café culture so serious that locals measure afternoons in espresso rounds. The rhythm here is unhurried: morning markets in Dolac, long walks through Maksimir when the chestnuts turn, evenings that start on a terrace in Tkalčićeva and drift until the city's yellow streetlights blur. The homes below open the door to that rhythm.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 7 free credits — one full week — so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All conversations happen inside the SwappaHome platform — you never have to share your personal email or phone number to coordinate a swap. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which neighbourhoods in Zagreb feel most local?

Górnji Grad (Upper Town) holds the historic core — steep lanes, red rooftops, the kind of quiet that feels centuries old. Below, Donji Grad unfolds in wide avenues and parks designed for strolling. But for everyday Zagreb, head to Trešnjevka or Trnje: residential blocks where bakeries outnumber souvenir shops, and you'll hear as much Croatian banter in the queue as tourist chatter. Tkalčićeva is the postcard strip, but the side streets around it — Vlaška, Martićeva — are where locals actually live.
