Home Exchange in Reykjavik

No verified homes listed in Reykjavik yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

Reykjavík smells like geothermal water and salt wind — two forces that shape how people live here. The city runs on a rhythm set by the light: endless summer evenings when locals swim outdoors at midnight, and winter mornings when the sun barely crests the horizon before sliding away again. This isn't a place you pass through; it's one you inhabit, learning which bakery has the warmest rúgbrauð on Sundays, which pool the neighbourhood gathers at before work, how to read the sky for northern lights. The homes below open the door to that rhythm.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 7 free credits — one full week — so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All conversations happen inside the SwappaHome platform — you never have to share your personal email or phone number to coordinate a swap. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What's the best time to experience Reykjavík like a local?

Winter (November–March) offers northern lights and the cosy hunkering-down culture of Icelandic homes, with thermal pools steaming against the cold. Summer (June–August) brings the midnight sun and a city that never quite sleeps, when locals picnic at Grótta at 11 p.m. and gardens explode with lupines. Shoulder seasons mean fewer crowds and dramatic light — September's moody skies or April's first bright days after the dark months. Icelanders don't wait for perfect weather; they dress for it.
