Home Exchange in Mdina

No verified homes listed in Mdina yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

Mdina's silence arrives first — no car engines, no honking, just footsteps on honey-coloured limestone and the distant clatter of a café shuttering for siesta. This fortified medieval city, perched on a hill in the heart of Malta, feels like a stage set abandoned by its actors, yet locals still live behind those baroque doorways and wrought-iron balconies. The light here is famously golden, especially in late afternoon when it pools in narrow alleys and turns the bastions amber. Staying within these walls, or in the quieter villages that ring them, means waking to church bells instead of alarm clocks, buying ftira from the same bakery the neighbours use, and watching the island stretch out below you toward the blue edge of the Mediterranean. The homes below open the door to that rhythm.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 7 free credits — one full week — so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All conversations happen inside the SwappaHome platform — you never have to share your personal email or phone number to coordinate a swap. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What's the best time to experience Mdina without the crowds?

Early morning or late afternoon, when day-trippers have left and the city exhales. Winter months — November through March — bring cooler weather and fewer tour groups, though you'll want a jacket for evening walks along the bastions. Spring is gentler, with wildflowers dotting the surrounding countryside. Summers are hot and busy, but if you're staying locally, you can retreat during midday heat and return for that magical golden hour when the stone glows and the streets empty again. Sundays feel particularly local, with families gathering after mass.
