Home Exchange in Wellington
No verified homes listed in Wellington yet — the first hosts get priority placement.
Wellington clings to steep hills that plunge into a harbour where the wind never stops. It's a city that smells like coffee and salt air, where strangers debate film and policy in the same breath, and where the cable car creaks upward past wooden villas painted in colours that shouldn't work together but do. This is New Zealand's capital, but it feels more like a village that accidentally grew a government—intimate enough that you'll recognize faces by day three, vast enough that you'll still find new laneway bars by day thirty. The homes below open the door to that rhythm.

Frequently asked questions
How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?
You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 7 free credits — one full week — so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.
Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?
Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All conversations happen inside the SwappaHome platform — you never have to share your personal email or phone number to coordinate a swap. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.
Do I need to swap directly with the same person?
No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.
Can I join if I don't own a home?
Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.
What's the best time to visit Wellington?
Summer (December to February) brings long evenings and harbour swimming, but Wellington's personality shines brightest in the shoulder seasons—March and April offer golden light and fewer crowds, while September and October mean clear skies before the tourist rush. Winter is wild and cinematic, all bruised clouds and cosy cafés. The wind blows year-round, so locals dress in layers and never trust an umbrella. If you're chasing festivals, February and March pack the calendar with art, film, and music.
