Home Exchange in Rio de Janeiro

No verified homes listed in Rio de Janeiro yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

The first sound is usually samba drifting from a corner bar, or the thwack of a football on Copacabana sand at dawn. Rio moves to its own clock—breakfast stretches past ten, lunch happens whenever hunger wins over conversation, and the beach isn't a destination so much as the city's living room. Staying in a carioca home means you're handed the keys to that rhythm: the neighbourhood padaria with its still-warm pão de queijo, the juice stand guy who knows your name by day three, the view from a Botafogo balcony as the light turns gold over Sugarloaf. The homes below open the door to that life.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All conversations happen inside the SwappaHome platform — you never have to share your personal email or phone number to coordinate a swap. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which neighbourhoods in Rio feel most like local life?

Ipanema and Leblon blend beach culture with tree-lined residential streets and excellent cafés, while Botafogo and Flamengo offer a grittier, more lived-in vibe with bay views and cheaper eats. Santa Teresa, perched in the hills, feels like a village within the city—cobblestones, art studios, and the old tram rattling past colonial houses. Copacabana skews touristy but has pockets of authentic carioca life if you venture a few blocks inland. For true neighbourhood immersion, locals often point to Laranjeiras or Cosme Velho, where you're more likely to hear Portuguese than English and the corner boteco is the evening's main event.
