Home Exchange in Valparaiso

No verified homes listed in Valparaiso yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

Valparaíso clings to the Pacific in a cascade of painted houses and graffitied staircases, its forty-odd hills connected by rickety ascensores that creak upward through salt air and fog. The port hums with container ships and fishing boats, while the cerros above fill with bohemian cafés, street musicians, and cats dozing on corrugated tin roofs. Wander Cerro Alegre or Cerro Concepción for art galleries in converted mansions, then descend to the chaotic lower town for empanadas and the clang of trolleybuses. Poet Pablo Neruda built one of his homes here, drawn to the city's anarchic charm and endless horizon.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which hills should I explore in Valparaíso?

Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción are the most visitor-friendly, with boutique hotels, murals, and ocean views, but they can feel polished. For grittier authenticity, wander Cerro Bellavista (home to Neruda's La Sebastiana) or Cerro Cárcel, where laundry flaps between houses and locals gather in corner almacenes. Each hill has its own personality—some steep and silent, others loud with street art and accordion music. Ascensores (funiculars) make the climbs easier, though many are charmingly unreliable.
