Home Exchange in Hamburg
No verified homes listed in Hamburg yet — the first hosts get priority placement.
Hamburg wears its port heritage like a well-loved wool coat — practical, lived-in, never showy. The city smells of salt and coffee beans drifting from the Speicherstadt warehouses, where brick canals reflect centuries of trade. Neighbourhoods like Sternschanze hum with late-night Flammkuchen spots and record shops, while the Alster lakes offer quiet mornings watching sailboats cut through mist. This is a city that works for a living but knows how to pour a proper Astra beer at sunset. Expect rain, cobblestones, and a dry northern wit.

Frequently asked questions
How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?
You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.
Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?
Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.
Do I need to swap directly with the same person?
No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.
Can I join if I don't own a home?
Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.
Which neighbourhoods capture Hamburg's character best?
Sternschanze and Karolinenviertel feel young and scruffy, dense with cafés and street art. St. Pauli carries the port's raucous spirit — less polished, more honest. Eimsbüttel offers tree-lined calm and weekend markets, while Winterhude hugs the Alster with joggers and swans. The Speicherstadt and HafenCity show Hamburg's maritime bones, all red brick and new glass. Each pocket has its own rhythm, but the Elbe River threads through them all.
