Home Exchange in Akureyri

No verified homes listed in Akureyri yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

Akureyri sits at the head of Iceland's longest fjord, cradled by mountains that glow pink in the midnight sun and vanish under winter's blue darkness. This is the north's gentle capital — a town of corrugated-iron houses painted in primary colours, geothermal swimming pools where locals gather year-round, and a botanical garden that somehow coaxes roses from sub-Arctic soil. The air smells of salt and snow, depending on the season. Whale-watching boats leave from the harbour, and the surrounding valleys hide waterfalls, lava fields, and farms where horses graze under the northern lights.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What's the best time to visit Akureyri?

Summer — June through August — brings near-constant daylight, wildflowers in the highlands, and the warmest weather (though 'warm' here means 10-15°C). It's ideal for hiking, whale-watching, and exploring the fjord by boat. Winter transforms Akureyri into a northern lights theatre, with snow-draped peaks and excellent skiing at Hlíðarfjall. The town itself stays cosy and walkable year-round, with geothermal pools steaming in the cold. Spring and autumn are quieter, with dramatic skies and fewer visitors, though some highland roads close until late May.
