Home Exchange in Reykjavik

No verified homes listed in Reykjavik yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

Reykjavik sits at the edge of the world, where geothermal steam rises from cracks in the pavement and the air smells faintly of sulphur and salt. The compact city centre feels more like a collection of neighbourhoods than a capital—wooden houses painted in primary colours, corner bakeries selling rúgbrauð, and cafés that turn into music venues after dark. Winters bring the possibility of northern lights shimmering over Faxaflói Bay, while summer means midnight sun and locals swimming in heated outdoor pools no matter the weather. Beyond the city limits, black sand beaches and moss-covered lava fields wait under enormous skies.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What's the rhythm of life like in Reykjavik?

Reykjavik moves slowly, especially in winter when daylight barely stretches past lunch. Locals prioritize cosy interiors—long meals, hot springs, and wool sweaters—over rushing. Summer flips the script: the city stays awake until midnight, with families picnicking at Nauthólsvík beach and musicians playing impromptu sets in Laugavegur. Most neighbourhoods are walkable, though wind off the Atlantic can be fierce. The city empties on weekends as residents head to countryside cabins, returning Sunday night smelling of woodsmoke and hot spring minerals.
