Home Exchange in Utrecht

No verified homes listed in Utrecht yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

Utrecht feels like Amsterdam's quieter, more confident sibling — canals lined with brick cellars turned cafés, church bells marking the hour from the Dom Tower, bicycles everywhere but without the tourist crush. The city moves at a human pace: markets spill onto cobblestones on Saturdays, students sprawl along the Oudegracht's sunny wharves in spring, and narrow medieval streets open suddenly onto green courtyards. It's a place where you can hear yourself think, taste stroopwafels still warm from the iron, and lose an afternoon in a secondhand bookshop without once consulting a map.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which neighbourhoods in Utrecht feel most lived-in?

Lombok and Wittevrouwen are beloved by locals — tree-lined streets, corner bakeries, weekly markets where neighbours actually stop to chat. The Museumkwartier offers elegant townhouses near parks, while Vogelenbuurt (the 'bird neighbourhood') charms with its quiet, village-like feel despite being minutes from the centre. All are easily bikeable from the old town, which matters here: Utrecht is a city that reveals itself best on two wheels, not through a bus window.
