Home Exchange in Wellington
No verified homes listed in Wellington yet — the first hosts get priority placement.
Wellington clings to steep hills that tumble straight into Cook Strait, where southerly winds rattle the harbour and salt air drifts through Cuba Street's cafés. This is a city that takes its coffee seriously, where wooden villas painted in bold colours cascade down Mount Victoria and the waterfront hums with walkers, runners, and the occasional seal. Te Papa anchors the harbour, but the real texture lives in the laneways of the central city — craft beer breweries tucked into old warehouses, bookshops that feel like living rooms, and the cable car climbing to the Botanic Garden's canopy. It's compact, walkable, and fiercely creative.

Frequently asked questions
How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?
You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.
Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?
Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.
Do I need to swap directly with the same person?
No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.
Can I join if I don't own a home?
Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.
What's the weather really like in Wellington?
Wellington earns its nickname as the windiest city, with strong southerlies sweeping up the strait year-round — but that same breeze keeps summer temperatures mild and the air crisp. Layering is essential: mornings can be cool and blustery, afternoons unexpectedly warm. Rain arrives in quick squalls rather than lingering grey. Spring and autumn bring the most dramatic skies, while summer (December to February) offers long, golden evenings perfect for the waterfront. Winter is brisk but rarely freezing, and the hills occasionally dust with snow.
