Home Exchange in Utrecht

No verified homes listed in Utrecht yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

Utrecht hums with the sound of bicycle bells and canal water lapping against medieval brick. The city moves at a slower cadence than Amsterdam—cafés spill onto wharves where boats once unloaded grain, students sprawl on the grass beneath the Dom Tower, and neighbourhoods like Lombok and Wittevrouwen feel more like villages than districts of a university town. Staying here means morning markets in Vredenburg, bread from a bakery older than your guidebook, and evenings when the carillon rings out over rooftops that haven't changed their angle in three centuries. The homes below open the door to that rhythm.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 7 free credits — one full week — so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All conversations happen inside the SwappaHome platform — you never have to share your personal email or phone number to coordinate a swap. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which neighbourhoods in Utrecht feel most local?

Lombok, just west of the centre, is a multicultural pocket known for its Moroccan bakeries and Sunday market. Wittevrouwen to the east feels residential and leafy, with independent shops along Nachtegaalstraat. Oudwijk has a village-like calm, while the canal-ring Binnenstad offers centuries-old townhouses and cobbled lanes. Most locals cycle everywhere—distances are small, and the city's flat geography makes a bike the natural way to move between these pockets of daily life.
