Home Exchange in San José

No verified homes listed in San José yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

San José hums with a particular Central Valley energy — markets spilling over with guanábana and cas, the smell of coffee roasting somewhere always, and a skyline ringed by green volcanoes. The capital doesn't pretend to be a beach town; it's where Ticos actually live, work, and eat gallo pinto at sodas with plastic chairs. Barrios Amón and Escalante offer tree-lined streets and old coffee-baron mansions turned galleries, while the Mercado Central is pure sensory overload: butchers, herbalists, and women selling tres leches by the slice. It rains most afternoons between May and November, hard and fast, then clears.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What's the best way to experience San José beyond the tourist trail?

Skip the standard city-centre checklist and spend time in Barrio Escalante, where locals meet for craft beer and ceviche at corner spots. Wander the Mercado Central early — buy fresh horchata, watch the rhythm of daily commerce. Take the train to Heredia or Cartago for a few colones and see how the Valley connects. San José is best treated as a base, not a destination: close enough to Poás, Irazú, and the cloud forests that you can leave at dawn and return for dinner.
