Home Exchange in Johannesburg

No verified homes listed in Johannesburg yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

Johannesburg sprawls across the Highveld plateau, a city of jacaranda-lined streets that turn purple each spring, and neighbourhoods where art galleries share walls with jazz clubs and Ethiopian coffee houses. Maboneng pulses with rooftop bars and street murals, while Melville's bohemian cafés spill onto pavements under ancient trees. The air here sits thin and bright at altitude, and weekends might mean browsing Neighbourgoods Market in Braamfontein or hiking the Melville Koppies. It's a city that rewards the curious—one where you'll taste bunny chow, hear five languages before noon, and find that every suburb tells a different story.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which neighbourhoods should I explore in Johannesburg?

Maboneng draws creatives with its galleries and Sunday markets, while Melville offers vintage shops and live music venues along its main strip. Braamfontein hums with student energy and weekend food markets. Parkhurst and Greenside feel residential but hide excellent restaurants in converted houses. Rosebank blends shopping with the African Craft Market on Sundays. Soweto, to the southwest, holds profound history—Vilakazi Street alone gave home to two Nobel laureates. Each area has its own rhythm, and Joburg locals tend to know their neighbourhood deeply rather than the whole city at once.
