Home Exchange in Portland
No verified homes listed in Portland yet — the first hosts get priority placement.
Portland unfolds in layers: rain-slicked streets lined with food carts serving everything from Korean tacos to vegan doughnuts, bridges arching over the Willamette, and neighbourhoods that shift from Victorian elegance in Irvington to the indie bookshops and vinyl haunts of Hawthorne. The city moves to its own rhythm—coffee culture runs deep, cyclists claim the roads, and forest trails begin where sidewalks end. Powell's occupies an entire city block. Mount Hood watches from the east. Between the pine-scented gorge and the laid-back cafés, Portland feels less like a metropolis and more like a very large, very creative town that happens to take its beer, bread, and bridges seriously.

Frequently asked questions
How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?
You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.
Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?
Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.
Do I need to swap directly with the same person?
No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.
Can I join if I don't own a home?
Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.
Which neighbourhoods capture Portland's character best?
The Pearl District offers galleries and converted warehouses near the riverfront, while Alberta Arts buzzes with murals and weekend markets. Hawthorne and Division feel residential and walkable, packed with thrift stores and brunch spots. For something quieter, Sellwood's antique row and riverside paths draw locals. Each neighbourhood has its own coffee roaster and at least one beloved taco cart—Portland's hyperlocal pride means you'll rarely eat the same thing twice, even a few blocks apart.
