Home Exchange in Nara

No verified homes listed in Nara yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

The smell of incense drifts from temple halls older than most European cities, while deer bow for crackers along stone paths worn smooth by a thousand years of footsteps. Nara rewards the traveller who slows down—who takes breakfast in a machiya guesthouse, walks the back lanes of Naramachi where latticed shopfronts sell handmade brushes and persimmon-leaf sushi, and returns at dusk when the crowds thin and the park deer settle under pines. This is a place measured in seasons and centuries, not itineraries. The homes below open the door to that rhythm.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 7 free credits — one full week — so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All conversations happen inside the SwappaHome platform — you never have to share your personal email or phone number to coordinate a swap. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which season shows Nara at its best?

Spring brings cherry blossoms to Nara Park and the temple precincts, while autumn sets the maple corridors of Kasuga Taisha ablaze. Winter is quietest—frost on moss gardens, fewer visitors, the deer's coats thick and pale. Summer can be humid, but early mornings are luminous. Many locals say late autumn or early spring, when the light is soft and the temples feel like they belong to you alone.
