Home Exchange in Helsinki
No verified homes listed in Helsinki yet — the first hosts get priority placement.
Helsinki wakes to the smell of cardamom from market hall bakeries and the cry of gulls over the harbour. This is a city built on granite and sea, where saunas outnumber traffic lights and locals swim year-round from wooden jetties. The rhythm here is unhurried — long summer light that never quite fades, winter darkness punctuated by candles in every window, design that prizes function over fuss. Staying in a local home means morning coffee on a balcony facing the Baltic, a kitchen stocked with rye bread and Fazer chocolate, perhaps a building sauna downstairs. The homes below open the door to that rhythm.

Frequently asked questions
How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?
You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 7 free credits — one full week — so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.
Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?
Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All conversations happen inside the SwappaHome platform — you never have to share your personal email or phone number to coordinate a swap. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.
Do I need to swap directly with the same person?
No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.
Can I join if I don't own a home?
Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.
When does Helsinki feel most itself?
June through August brings the midnight sun and a city-wide exhale — terraces fill, ferries run to island cottages, and the waterfront hums until 11 p.m. But locals will tell you September is the secret: still warm enough for archipelago swimming, forests turning copper, and the cultural season just beginning. Winter is for those who crave hygge and sauna culture — dark by 3 p.m., but the design district glows, and ice swimming becomes a daily ritual.
