Best Neighbourhoods Home Exchange in Vietnam

Live in the areas locals actually love.

Vietnam's neighbourhoods reveal themselves in layers—the tree-lined French colonial streets of Hanoi's Tay Ho district where locals gather for morning pho, the narrow alleyways of Hoi An's old town glowing with lantern light at dusk, the buzzing apartment blocks of Ho Chi Minh City's District 2 where rooftop cafes overlook the Saigon River. Each area carries its own rhythm, from the lakeside calm of Hanoi's West Lake to the beachfront energy of Da Nang's An Thuong. Staying in a local neighbourhood means waking to the sounds of street vendors, discovering the banh mi cart everyone queues at, and understanding how Vietnamese life unfolds beyond the tourist corridors.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What should I know about choosing a neighbourhood to stay in Vietnam?

Consider proximity to wet markets for fresh morning routines, and whether you want old quarter charm or modern apartment living. Northern neighbourhoods often feature narrow tube houses with shared walls, while southern areas tend toward apartment blocks with better air conditioning. Look for districts near lakes or rivers for evening walking culture—Vietnamese families gather outdoors after dark when temperatures drop. Alleyway addresses (hem) can be tricky for deliveries but offer authentic local immersion. Noise levels vary widely; ask about proximity to karaoke venues and early-morning pagoda bells if you're a light sleeper.
