Every season opens up different parts of the country.

Costa Rica's dramatic seasonal shifts make it a natural fit for travellers who follow the sun or chase the rain. The dry season (December through April) draws sun-seekers to the Pacific beaches and cloud forest trails, while the green season (May through November) transforms the countryside into a lush, waterfall-fed paradise with fewer crowds and lower prices. Whether you're escaping northern winters in a coastal town or embracing the verdant months in the Central Valley, the country's compact size lets you shift microclimates in a couple of hours. Seasonal rhythms here aren't just weather—they're woven into harvest cycles, turtle nesting, and the ebb and flow of local life.

Homes, not hotel rooms

Live in a real Costa Rica home — kitchen, balcony, neighbourhood rhythm — instead of a generic hotel room.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What should seasonal travellers know about Costa Rica's two main seasons?

The dry season (verano) offers reliably sunny days ideal for beach stays and hiking, but accommodations book early and prices peak. The green season (invierno) brings afternoon showers that clear by evening, jungle trails at their most vibrant, and a quieter, more local pace. Neither season is prohibitive—roads remain passable, and most attractions stay open year-round. Many seasonal travellers split their stay, catching dry-season sun on the coast before retreating to cooler highland towns when the rains arrive. Both seasons have their own magic; your choice depends on whether you prioritise guaranteed sunshine or lush solitude.
