Every season opens up different parts of the country.

New Zealand's dramatic seasonal shifts transform the country into entirely different destinations throughout the year. Summer brings long twilight evenings perfect for South Island hiking and North Island beach culture, while winter turns Queenstown and Wanaka into proper ski towns with après scenes and alpine charm. Spring unveils lamb-dotted pastures and wildflower-carpeted reserves, and autumn paints Central Otago's vineyards in copper and gold. The shoulder seasons offer the country's famous walking tracks without the crowds, and accommodation costs drop significantly outside December-February. Because New Zealand sits below the equator, your winter becomes their summer — making it ideal for chasing endless sunshine or timing your visit around harvest festivals, whale migrations, or the ski season that runs June through October.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What's the best season to visit New Zealand for avoiding crowds while still having good weather?

Late spring (November) and early autumn (March-April) offer the sweet spot. You'll find settled weather, warm enough for most outdoor activities, and significantly fewer tourists than peak summer. March is particularly lovely — the sea is still warm from summer, vineyards are harvesting, and hiking tracks are accessible but quieter. November brings blooming lupins and rhododendrons, longer days, and accommodation availability. Both periods avoid the December-February rush when domestic holidaymakers and international visitors converge, and you'll find locals more relaxed and available for genuine interactions.
