Costa Rica rewards solo travellers with a rare combination of adventure infrastructure and genuine warmth. You'll find well-marked trails through cloud forests and volcanic national parks, a robust network of shuttle services connecting coastal towns and mountain villages, and a culture that treats solo diners and hikers as the norm rather than the exception. The country's compact size means you can surf Pacific waves in the morning and soak in Caribbean-side hot springs by evening, all while navigating in a mix of Spanish and enthusiastic English. Ticos are famously welcoming, and the sheer density of other independent travellers creates natural opportunities for connection without the pressure of group travel.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Is Costa Rica genuinely safe for solo travellers, especially women travelling alone?

Costa Rica consistently ranks as Central America's safest country, with a stable democracy and no standing army since 1949. Solo women travellers are common, particularly in tourist zones like Monteverde, La Fortuna, and the Nicoya Peninsula. That said, practice normal urban caution in San José after dark, avoid isolated beaches at night, and use registered taxis or Uber. Petty theft happens in crowded bus stations and beaches, so keep valuables secure. Locals are generally respectful, and you'll encounter many other solo travellers on shuttle buses and guided tours, making it easy to share experiences when you want company.
