Romania rewards solo travellers with a rare mix of accessibility and discovery. You'll find yourself tracing Saxon fortified churches in Transylvania's hill towns, sharing plum brandy with locals in painted monasteries of Bucovina, or hiking alone through the Carpathians with trails that feel like your own secret. Cities like Cluj-Napoca and Brașov offer walkable centres, affordable guesthouses, and a young, welcoming vibe that makes striking up conversations easy. The country moves at a pace that suits solo exploration—trains connect regions slowly but scenically, and English is common enough in urban areas to navigate confidently while still feeling pleasantly off the well-worn trail.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Is Romania easy to navigate as a solo traveller without a car?

Romania's train network connects major cities and many smaller towns, though journeys can be slow and schedules require patience. Buses fill the gaps, especially in rural areas like Maramureș or the Danube Delta. In cities, walking is often the best way to explore—Bucharest, Cluj, and Sibiu have compact, pedestrian-friendly centres. For remote monasteries or mountain trailheads, shared minibuses or arranging a local driver works well. Solo travellers find the pace manageable, and the slower rhythm often leads to spontaneous conversations and unexpected detours that become trip highlights.
