Turkey rewards solo travellers with a rare combination of warmth and independence. You'll find yourself invited to share tea in an Istanbul bookshop, wandering Cappadocia's cave valleys at your own pace, or claiming a corner table in an Izmir meyhane where strangers become dinner companions. The country's dense dolmuş networks and overnight buses make spontaneous route changes easy, while its deeply rooted hospitality culture means you're never truly alone unless you want to be. Coastal towns like Kaş and Fethiye draw solo hikers and sailors, and the rhythm of daily life—morning simit vendors, sunset calls to prayer—creates a comforting structure even when you're off the map.

Why Turkey works for for solo travellers

Homes, not hotel rooms

Live in a real Turkey home — kitchen, balcony, neighbourhood rhythm — instead of a generic hotel room.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Is Turkey easy to navigate as a solo traveller without much Turkish language?

Yes, especially in tourist corridors and cities. English appears on transport signs, menus in coastal and central hubs, and younger Turks often speak it conversationally. Learning a handful of phrases—merhaba, teşekkür ederim, nerede—opens doors and earns smiles. In rural Anatolia or eastern provinces, a translation app helps, but gestures and patience go a long way. Turks are famously generous with directions, often walking you halfway to your destination. Solo travellers consistently note that the culture's instinct to help makes linguistic gaps feel small.
