Home Exchange in Leuven

No verified homes listed in Leuven yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

Leuven smells like malt and wet cobblestones after rain. This is Belgium's oldest university town, where Gothic spires rise above brown cafés and students spill onto terraces clutching Stella Artois brewed a few blocks away. Unlike Brussels' bureaucratic hum or Bruges' postcard crowds, Leuven moves to a semester rhythm — quiet Augusts, buzzing Octobers, the Oude Markt filling nightly with that particular European magic of beer, conversation, and bells tolling the hour. To stay here is to slip into that tempo: morning markets in the Ladeuzeplein, afternoons in the Groot Begijnhof's medieval lanes, evenings where locals and students blur into one long table. The homes below open the door to that rhythm.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All conversations happen inside the SwappaHome platform — you never have to share your personal email or phone number to coordinate a swap. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What's the best way to experience Leuven like a local?

Leuven reveals itself on foot and by bike — the compact centre loops from the Grote Markt to the Begijnhof in twenty minutes, but locals take hours, stopping for jenever in wood-panelled bars or fresh bread from bakeries tucked down side streets. The university quarter around Naamsestraat feels youngest; the Vaartkom canal district, once industrial, now hums with weekend markets and waterside terraces. Visit during term time for full energy, or in July-August for a quieter, almost secret version of the city. trains connect you to Brussels in twenty-five minutes, Antwerp in forty.
