Home Exchange in Selfoss

No verified homes listed in Selfoss yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

Selfoss sits where Iceland's fertile south meets the glacial rivers that carve through black-sand plains. This quiet town on the banks of the Ölfusá hums with geothermal energy and the scent of greenhouses growing tomatoes year-round. It's a gateway to the Golden Circle, but also a place unto itself—where locals gather at the bakery on Austurvegur, and the midnight sun in June turns the river gold. Stay here and you're close to Þingvellir's rift valley, Geysir's steam, and Gullfoss's roar, but you'll wake to a rhythm that feels more neighbour than tourist trail.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

When's the best time to visit Selfoss?

Summer (June through August) brings near-endless daylight and lupine blooms along the roadsides, ideal for hiking and chasing waterfalls. Winter offers Northern Lights potential and a quieter, more introspective Iceland—though roads can ice over and days are short. Spring and autumn split the difference: fewer crowds, shifting light, and a chance to see the landscape in transition. Whenever you come, pack layers; the weather here changes faster than you can zip a jacket.
