Home Exchange in Nara

No verified homes listed in Nara yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

Nara feels like stepping into a scroll painting where deer bow for crackers and wooden temple eaves curve against pine-covered hills. The old capital hums with a quieter rhythm than Kyoto—moss grows thick on stone lanterns, and you can hear the crunch of gravel underfoot at Kasuga Taisha. Naramachi's latticed machiya houses hide cafés serving persimmon-leaf sushi, and by late afternoon, the deer retreat to Wakakusayama's slopes as temple bells drift across the basin. It's a place that rewards slow mornings and long walks through centuries.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What's the best way to experience Nara beyond the main park?

Wander south into Naramachi, the old merchant quarter, where narrow lanes reveal traditional townhouses converted into workshops and tearooms. Climb Wakakusayama for sunset views over the basin, or cycle west toward Toshodaiji and Yakushiji—temples that see fewer crowds but hold equal beauty. Early morning at Nigatsu-do, before the tour groups arrive, offers a meditative start. Spring brings cherry blossoms to Yoshino's mountains an hour south, while autumn paints the maple corridors around Kasuga Taisha in flame colours.
