Home Exchange in Sapporo

No verified homes listed in Sapporo yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

Sapporo sprawls across Hokkaido's snowy plains with a grid of wide boulevards and a skyline softened by mountain silhouettes. Winter here smells like miso ramen and wood smoke; summer brings beer gardens under the elms and festivals that spill into Odori Park. The city moves to a slower northern rhythm than Tokyo or Osaka—bicycles outnumber taxis, izakayas fill early, and the seafood tastes of cold currents. Neighbourhoods like Maruyama hold quiet shrines beneath forest canopies, while Susukino's neon hums late into the night. It's a place built for seasons, where you learn to live with snow and celebrate its thaw.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What's the best season to experience Sapporo?

Winter transforms Sapporo into a snow capital—February's Snow Festival draws millions, and nearby slopes offer some of Japan's finest powder. But summer has its own charm: mild temperatures, the Sapporo Beer Festival, and lavender fields blooming an hour north in Furano. Spring arrives late, with cherry blossoms peaking in early May, while autumn paints the surrounding mountains in rust and gold. Each season offers a distinct face of Hokkaido, though locals will tell you the city truly belongs to winter.
