Home Exchange in Dunedin
No verified homes listed in Dunedin yet — the first hosts get priority placement.
Dunedin wears its Scottish heritage lightly — you'll hear it in street names like Princes and George, taste it in whisky distilleries, but the city's soul is shaped by wild coastline and student energy. Perched where hills tumble into Otago Harbour, this southern gem offers Victorian architecture alongside albatross colonies, craft breweries tucked into heritage warehouses, and the world's steepest residential street. Mornings smell of coffee from laneway cafés; evenings echo with live music spilling from the Octagon. It's a place where penguins waddle ashore at dusk and bookshops outnumber chain stores — quieter than Auckland, wilder than Wellington, utterly itself.

Frequently asked questions
How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?
You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.
Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?
Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.
Do I need to swap directly with the same person?
No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.
Can I join if I don't own a home?
Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.
What's the best time to experience Dunedin's wildlife?
Late spring through autumn (November to April) brings the most reliable wildlife encounters — royal albatross chicks fledge at Taiaroa Head, yellow-eyed penguins return to shore at sunset, and fur seals bask on coastal rocks. Winter has its own magic: fewer visitors, dramatic storm-watching along the Otago Peninsula, and clearer chances of spotting sea lions. The city itself hums year-round with student term energy, though January and February see a quieter, sun-drenched rhythm when the university empties and locals reclaim the beaches.
