Home Exchange in Rotorua
No verified homes listed in Rotorua yet β the first hosts get priority placement.
Rotorua announces itself before you see it β the sulphur-sweet scent of geothermal vents drifting through pine forests, steam rising from sidewalk cracks, mud pools burbling in backyards. This is New Zealand's volcanic heartland, where MΔori culture runs deep and the earth itself feels restless and alive. Neighbourhoods like Ohinemutu sit on the lakeshore with carved meeting houses and thermal springs still used for cooking. Beyond the town, Redwoods forests tower in cathedral silence, and Lake Rotorua stretches glassy and wide. It's a place that hums with both ancient rhythms and the easy warmth of a lakeside community.

Frequently asked questions
How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?
You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network β always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.
Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?
Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews β reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.
Do I need to swap directly with the same person?
No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.
Can I join if I don't own a home?
Yes β you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.
What should I know about Rotorua's geothermal activity?
The whole town sits on active geothermal fields, so that eggy sulphur smell is part of daily life β locals barely notice it after a day or two. Some residential streets have steam vents in gardens, and many homes use geothermal heating. It's perfectly safe, but don't be surprised if your towels pick up a faint mineral scent. The thermal parks and mud pools are the dramatic tourist face of it, but the real magic is how casually Rotorua lives with its volcanic landscape β hot pools in suburban backyards, warm footpaths in winter, a town genuinely heated from below.
