Every season opens up different parts of the country.

Finland transforms dramatically with each season, making it a dream destination for travellers who chase specific natural phenomena. Winter brings the ethereal northern lights dancing over Lapland's snow-draped forests, while summer unfolds the midnight sun across archipelago waters that never darken. Spring means witnessing the dramatic ice break on vast lakes, and autumn paints the ruska—the brief, blazing fall foliage that sets northern fells ablaze in crimson and gold. Each season unlocks different cultural rhythms too: summer cottage life on lakeshores, autumn mushroom foraging traditions, winter sauna rituals followed by ice swimming, and spring festivals celebrating the return of light.

Why Finland works for seasonal travel

Homes, not hotel rooms

Live in a real Finland home — kitchen, balcony, neighbourhood rhythm — instead of a generic hotel room.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What's the best season to visit Finland for specific experiences?

Winter (December–March) offers northern lights, husky sledding, and proper snow in Lapland, though days are short. Summer (June–August) brings midnight sun, lake swimming, and cottage culture, with Finns flocking to their mökki retreats. Autumn (September–October) is brief but spectacular for ruska foliage and mushroom foraging, with fewer crowds. Spring (April–May) sees longer days and melting landscapes, though it's considered the 'muddy season' locally. For aurora hunters, late autumn and early spring offer dark skies without the deepest winter cold.
