Iceland transforms dramatically with the seasons, offering travellers distinct experiences whether you arrive under the midnight sun or the aurora-laden winter sky. Summer brings endless daylight for hiking volcanic highlands and soaking in geothermal pools surrounded by lupine blooms, while winter unveils ice caves, snow-draped lava fields, and the chance to witness the northern lights from a cosy countryside home. Spring and autumn offer their own rewards: quieter roads, dramatic weather shifts, and the raw beauty of a landscape in transition. Timing your visit to Iceland's seasonal rhythms means choosing between green valleys and glacier tongues in July or frost-kissed black sand beaches in February.

Frequently asked questions
How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?
You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 7 free credits — one full week — so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.
Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?
Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All conversations happen inside the SwappaHome platform — you never have to share your personal email or phone number to coordinate a swap. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.
Do I need to swap directly with the same person?
No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.
Can I join if I don't own a home?
Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.
What should seasonal travellers know about visiting Iceland at different times of year?
Summer (June–August) delivers near-constant daylight and accessible highland roads, ideal for ambitious road trips and multi-day hikes. Winter (November–March) brings shorter days but spectacular auroras, ice cave access, and a quieter, more introspective Iceland. Spring and autumn are shoulder seasons with unpredictable weather, fewer crowds, and lower accommodation costs. Pack layers year-round—Icelandic weather shifts quickly regardless of season. Winter tyres and experience driving in snow are essential from October through April.
