Bulgaria rewards solo travellers with an easy rhythm and unexpected depth. You'll find mountain trails that don't require a guide, monasteries tucked into cliffs where you can sit in silence, and Sofia's café culture that welcomes lone readers with strong coffee and no rush. The country moves at a pace that suits independent exploration — buses connect even remote villages, English pops up in hostels and coworking spots, and locals tend to respect solitude without coldness. Whether you're drawn to the Black Sea coast in shoulder season or the Rila range in autumn, Bulgaria offers the rare combination of affordability, safety, and enough fellow wanderers that you're never truly isolated unless you want to be.

Frequently asked questions
How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?
You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.
Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?
Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.
Do I need to swap directly with the same person?
No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.
Can I join if I don't own a home?
Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.
Is Bulgaria a good destination for first-time solo travellers in Eastern Europe?
Bulgaria is one of the gentler entry points into the Balkans. Sofia and Plovdiv have reliable public transport, English-speaking communities, and a growing number of solo-friendly guesthouses and coworking cafés. Outside the cities, trails are well-marked, and small-town guesthouses often host other independent travellers. Costs are low enough that you can afford flexibility — a last-minute hostel bed or an extra night in a mountain hut. The culture leans reserved but helpful, and petty crime is rare. It's a place where solitude feels safe rather than lonely.
