Colombia rewards solo travellers with a rhythm all its own. From the cobbled lanes of colonial towns where you'll strike up conversations over tinto coffee to the vibrant hostel scenes in mountain valleys, travelling alone here means slipping into communities with ease. The country's improving infrastructure — reliable buses between regions, walkable city centres, growing coworking spaces — makes independent movement straightforward, while its culture of warmth means you're rarely alone for long. Whether you're drawn to Caribbean coastlines, cloud forests, or the creative energy of urban barrios, Colombia offers solo explorers both adventure and genuine human connection.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Is Colombia welcoming for solo travellers, and where should I base myself?

Colombia has become exceptionally solo-friendly, especially in well-trodden routes. Cities like Medellín and Bogotá offer strong expat and traveller communities, coworking hubs, and neighbourhoods like Laureles or Chapinero where you'll easily meet others. Coastal Cartagena and laid-back Salento provide smaller-scale charm with active social scenes. Colombians are famously hospitable — locals often invite solo travellers to join meals or festivals. Spanish helps immensely, but even basic phrases open doors. Stick to recommended neighbourhoods, travel during daylight between regions, and you'll find Colombia both safe and socially rich for independent exploration.
