For Solo Travellers Home Exchange in Iceland

Compact, well-connected homes with a local community nearby.

No listings matched yet in Iceland be the first host

Iceland rewards solo travellers with a rare combination: wild solitude when you want it, and easy social connection when you don't. The country's compact size and well-marked trails make independent exploration straightforward, whether you're hiking between huts on the Laugavegur or chasing waterfalls along the Ring Road. Reykjavík's café culture and hostel common rooms provide natural meeting points, while the tradition of communal hot pot soaking turns strangers into trail companions. Most locals speak fluent English, and the midnight sun in summer means you set your own rhythm without losing daylight.

Why Iceland works for for solo travellers

Homes, not hotel rooms

Live in a real Iceland home — kitchen, balcony, neighbourhood rhythm — instead of a generic hotel room.

Fair by design

1 credit = 1 night. Every home is worth the same. No bidding, no haggling, no price surges.

Curated for for solo travellers

We prioritise wifi · apartments — the kind of homes that actually fit the travel style.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Is Iceland easy to navigate alone without a car?

Summer buses connect Reykjavík to major sites like the Golden Circle, South Coast waterfalls, and Akureyri, though schedules thin out in winter. Many solo travellers join small-group day tours from the capital for glacier hikes or northern lights, which double as social opportunities. For deeper exploration, renting a small car is common and driving is straightforward—roads are well-signed, traffic is light, and petrol stations double as wayfinding hubs. Hitching has a quiet tradition here, though it's slower in shoulder seasons.
