Home Exchange in La Serena

No verified homes listed in La Serena yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

La Serena stretches along Chile's northern coast where the Atacama Desert meets the Pacific, its colonial bell towers and white-sand beaches catching the same bright light that draws astronomers to the valleys inland. Mornings smell of empanadas from corner bakeries, afternoons hum with the rhythm of waves at Avenida del Mar, and evenings cool quickly under impossibly clear skies. The city's older barrios cluster around Plaza de Armas with stone churches and wooden balconies, while beachfront neighbourhoods like Peñuelas sprawl southward toward the dunes. It's a place that moves between desert stillness and ocean energy, where you can taste pisco from the Elqui Valley and swim before sunset on the same day.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

What's the best time of year to visit La Serena?

December through March brings warm, dry weather perfect for beach days and long twilights, though the city fills with Chilean families on summer holiday. Shoulder seasons—October to November and April to May—offer gentler crowds, pleasant temperatures, and clearer skies for stargazing in the nearby Elqui Valley. Winter (June to August) is cooler and quieter, with occasional rain, but the ocean stays swimmable year-round for those who don't mind a bracing dip. Whenever you visit, pack layers: desert nights drop fast, even in summer.
