Home Exchange in Madrid

No verified homes listed in Madrid yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

Madrid hums with a particular energy: late dinners that stretch past midnight, the clatter of terrazas spilling onto wide avenues, the smell of churros and chocolate drifting from century-old cafés. The city moves to its own clock—shops close for siesta, museums open late, and Sunday vermouth in Malasaña feels like a neighbourhood ritual. Between the golden light of Retiro Park and the tiled market halls of La Latina, Madrid reveals itself slowly, best understood through its barrios, each with its own cadence and character.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which neighbourhoods in Madrid feel most local?

Malasaña and Chueca pulse with independent shops and corner bars where locals linger over vermut. La Latina's narrow streets come alive on Sundays for El Rastro flea market, then fill with tapas crowds. Lavapiés feels more multicultural, grittier, with Moroccan tea shops and experimental galleries. Chamberí, just north of the centre, offers tree-lined streets and traditional tabernas without the tourist hum. Each barrio keeps its own rhythm—wander a few blocks and the city shifts entirely.
