Home Exchange in Basel
No verified homes listed in Basel yet — the first hosts get priority placement.
Basel sits where Switzerland folds into France and Germany, a city that's learned to live in three languages and several time zones at once. The Rhine cuts through its medieval core, cold and green, flanked by cobbled Kleinbasel on one side and the museum-thick Grossbasel on the other. This is a place that takes its art seriously—Fondation Beyeler, Kunstmuseum, the annual Art Basel fair—but also its carnival, when the entire city wakes at four in the morning to drums and piccolos. You'll find Läckerli biscuits in bakery windows, trams that glide over the Mittlere Brücke, and a quiet confidence that comes from being small, prosperous, and positioned exactly where borders blur.

Frequently asked questions
How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?
You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.
Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?
Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All messages run through our encrypted chat. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.
Do I need to swap directly with the same person?
No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.
Can I join if I don't own a home?
Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.
What's the best way to experience Basel's cross-border character?
Rent a bike and pedal into France for lunch in Saint-Louis, or cross the Dreiländereck monument where Switzerland, Germany, and France meet at the Rhine. The city's tram network extends into both neighbours, and locals think nothing of popping over for cheaper groceries or a different Sunday vibe. Summer's ideal—the river's warm enough to swim, and people float downstream on waterproof bags called Wickelfisch. Autumn brings the mist and the smell of roasting chestnuts near Marktplatz, when the city feels most itself.
