Home Exchange in Basel

No verified homes listed in Basel yet — the first hosts get priority placement.

Basel wakes to the sound of tram bells and the Rhine sliding past medieval guild houses. This is Switzerland's art capital, where Fondation Beyeler and Art Basel coexist with half-timbered Altstadt alleys and bakeries selling Basler Läckerli. The city straddles three borders—Swiss, French, German—and that triple identity shows in its café culture, its architecture, its bilingual street signs. Staying in a local home here means morning coffee on a balcony overlooking the Münster, or a kitchen stocked with Gruyère from the Saturday market. The homes below open the door to that rhythm.

Frequently asked questions

How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?

You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 10 free credits, so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.

Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?

Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All conversations happen inside the SwappaHome platform — you never have to share your personal email or phone number to coordinate a swap. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.

Do I need to swap directly with the same person?

No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.

Can I join if I don't own a home?

Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.

Which neighbourhoods in Basel feel most local?

Gundeldingen, south of the SBB station, pulses with independent cafés, street art, and a younger crowd. Kleinbasel, across the Rhine, offers a grittier, more residential feel—less polished than the Altstadt but rich in neighbourhood bakeries and Rheinufer swimming culture. St. Alban, hugging the river near the old paper mills, is quieter, leafy, and close to the Museum für Gegenwartskunst. All are well-connected by tram, and each offers a different slice of Basel's triple-border character.
