Home Exchange in Bern
No verified homes listed in Bern yet — the first hosts get priority placement.
Bern moves at the pace of its arcaded streets — unhurried, deliberate, built for lingering over a Zopf pastry in a café where the wooden chairs have been worn smooth by decades of Saturday mornings. The Aare loops around the Old Town in a turquoise ribbon cold enough to make you gasp, and locals swim it in summer like it's the most natural thing in the world. This is a capital that feels like a village, where fountains tell stories in allegory and the markets smell of alpine cheese and wild garlic. The homes that root you here — with their parquet floors and views over terracotta rooftops — let you slip into that rhythm, the one where time is measured in tram bells and the light turning gold over the Bundeshaus.

Frequently asked questions
How does home exchange on SwappaHome work?
You list your home, earn 1 credit for every night you host a guest, and spend those credits to stay at any other home in the network — always 1 credit per night. No money changes hands between members. New accounts start with 7 free credits — one full week — so you can book your first trip before you've hosted anyone.
Is it safe to swap homes with strangers?
Every member goes through identity verification before they can list or book. All conversations happen inside the SwappaHome platform — you never have to share your personal email or phone number to coordinate a swap. After each stay, guests and hosts leave mutual reviews — reputation is the foundation of the whole community, and members with low ratings lose access. For extra peace of mind, we recommend confirming house rules in writing before arrival.
Do I need to swap directly with the same person?
No. SwappaHome uses a credit system, not direct 1-to-1 swaps. You can host a family from Berlin and use the credits you earn to stay with a completely different host in Tokyo six months later. It makes travel dates, destinations and group sizes much easier to match.
Can I join if I don't own a home?
Yes — you can earn credits by hosting in a spare room, a long-term rental (if your lease allows guests) or by gifting/receiving credits from other members. You can also buy a starter pack if you want to travel before you host. Listing your primary home is the most common path, but it's not the only one.
Which neighbourhoods in Bern feel most lived-in?
The Old Town is UNESCO-listed but still residential — locals live above the arcades, hang laundry in hidden courtyards, shop at the weekly markets. Länggasse, just west, is where students and young families gather around independent bookshops and natural wine bars. Matte, the old artisan quarter below the Aare, has a village-within-a-city feel, with narrow lanes and a Saturday flea market. For quiet green streets and views, Kirchenfeld stretches south of the river, lined with embassies and belle époque villas.
